"Primary literature" in any area of science is the publication of the research, with the data in a journal that has been peer-reviewed. (vetted by experts in the field) This contrasts with "review articles, which may still be peer reviewed, but "review" or summarize various papers. Finally there are papers in the popular press- like prevention. If you have some medical issue, work backwards. Start with the popular press, go to review articles, and finally the primary literature. As you follow that path, the language will become more specialized and hard to understand.
