When your pet is ready to give birth, she most likely won't eat as usual, and will begin trying to hide or find a nice quite area.It is best to be prepared and get her a large box, line it with newspaper and as her contractions begin ,she will strat tearing the paper and scratching at it.After her contractions begin a pup should be born within 45 minutes to 1 hour.Watch her carefully and see that she removes bag of water pup is in from its' head first,if she doesn't you must remove the bag from the head,or pup will drown within seconds.,then let her finish cleaning the pup up.If no pups are expelled within 1 hour after she starts pushing with contractions, call your vet,as a pup could be blocked in birth canal, and she will require a C-Section.Good luck on your new litter.

When their temperature drops below 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit, labor will start with in 8-24 hours (this really works, my last female had a temp of 99 for several days before labor but as soon as her temp went below 98.2, it didn't take long before she had them). I notice a restlessness before the onset of labor. Some females may call for your attention, others will try to hide. You may see the dog shivering.
Some dogs will eat right up to the moment of delivery (I even heard of one that wanted a snack in between puppies LOL). Other won't eat a day or two before hand.
You should be sleeping beside her if she close to having her babies. Many dogs have their puppies in the night when it is quiet and dark. If you don't think you'll hear her start, set an alarm to check on her every hour or so. Like woman, when she actually goes into labor, it will be pretty obvious.

Shortly before birth, the temp. will drop, the dog will be restless and looking for a place to nest. She needs to be introduced to her whelping box, in a quiet room, so she can nest and get comfortable in there. Most moms stop eating a day or 2 before whelping.

Like human beings dogs also attain puberty and have their mensuration cycle (once in 3 to 6 months). Thats the right time for them to have
babies.

She will be restless, and start whining. In some dogs, you can actually see the contractions happening, and she will start licking "down there":)

Their temp goes up a few degrees, they try digging, and mild may leak from their teets about hours before labor starts. Shouldn't you know these things before breeding your animals?
