I mapquested it...and it said 2 hours. But...i'm not sure how much time I should add in for traffic.

I have to take the 101 for about 8 miles followed by the 5 south.

Too long.

How about taking the Metro Red Line from Universal City station to Union Station, then board the Metrolink to Oceanside, then the Coaster back to SD?

If you were going to Universal Studios from SD, then I would just drive to Oceanside, take the Metrolink from there into Union Station, then take the Red Line.

The 101 South will take you an hour to trvel 8 miles at that time of the day. Then it will be another two hours down the 5 to San Diego. If there is an accident anywhere along the route you can add an hour to an hour and a half.

I think it may take one to two extra hours if you're leaving from Universal about 3 p.m. on a weekday. We left San Diego on the 5 toward Mission Viejo and it took us three hours for a trip that would normally be about an hour.

Good luck.

It all depends on what day of the week you're going. I'd personally give myself a 4 hour plus time slot. If you have a passenger, the carpool lane will help tremendously! The diamond lanes are pretty good all the way down to Dana Point/San Clemente.

Unless your driving on a weekend or at 3 am that is the worst possible time to make that trip. I'm guessing it will take you anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.
