Well, I have read a lot about different methods of treating toenail fungus, and personally what I found worked for me was a Tea Tree oil mixture I found on the web. When I first suspected I had a problem I went to my doctor and checked out what it was. He took a sample and found that it was indeed fungus.
He suggested I could live with it, or treat it. I decided to do research first. Glad I did.
There are many "remedies" - varying from doubling up of Lamisil and Penlac, all the way to using diluted bleach. I think that each person should find something that they feel comfortable with, and stick with that for at least a month. It takes time to see results, because nails grow out slowly, and new, unblemished nails take a while to see.
The best source of personal discussions was a forum (non-profit, see 'Source' below) where people add there findings and experiences.
My experience with Tea Tree oil took about 3 weeks of continuous application (once daily, although they say to use it twice a day) before I saw any improvement. What a thrill when I saw it working.
I also believe that the diet plays a role in how much your body can resist fungus growing inside you. I try to keep my sugar and "mould food" (eg. cheese) down in quantity (even though they taste so good!
Best of luck in your efforts. Read lots!

Well if the toenail is discolored by fungus, the best treatment is to see a doctor and get a prescription for Lamisil. This works on the fungus from inside the body and gets to the nailbed where the fungus resides. If its just discoloration, they do make a whitener that will bleach the nail whitish again--you find this in the pharmacies near the foot care stuff.
I had toenail fungus and I seemed to have licked it using of all things Tea Tree Oil. Its antifungal, but the experts say that it can't get to where the fungus resides under the nail. But I used it and the fungus went away. I think the oil permeated the nail and got to the fungus. I used pure Tea Tree Oil from the Body Shop. I have no proof that it is what did the trick however.

fungus doesn't just dicolor toenails it deforms them as well. See your doctor to make sure it is a fungal problem and not a circulatory problem. Lamisil is often prescribed to treat toenail fungus, but be aware you have to take it for a minimum of three months before you see any results.

My local news channel did a special on different uses for toothpaste and one was that it can help get rid of some types of toe nail fungus. I don't know how much I believe it but if you are desperate you can try it.

I have a sister who has this problem and I told her to use Listerine mouth wash. Take the Listerine and soak your nails in it for approx. 20 minutes a day. It works, slowly, but it works. Also I heard that Vicks Vapor Rub also works too. Good Luck!!

My husband went to the Dr. with this problem. Cost a lot of money for the visit and meds. A friend of ours said to use Vicks Vapor Rub. Just rub it on the toenail at night before bed. It worked great for my husband...
