I think you did something wonderful. Many people just pass them by and ignore them. He obviously was too ungrateful. You are a very kind person. Don't let that one bad experience ruin it for you. There are several types of homeless out there some are for real and some are just into drinking and drugs. I think you found one into that. But, don't let it stop you in the future because there are real homeless out there who would have greatly appreciated that.. Your a great guy.

You are doing what a lot of people do... labelling YOURSELF the villain. I just watched a little newsclip on t.v. talking about how many people are out there p retending to be destitute, and panhandling in the streets. I heard some of them make as much as $30,000 in a year from the hardsweated dollars of softhearted people who work for a living. When somebody comes up to you in the street asking for money, you have no idea if he's genuine or not, or, if he truly IS homeless, what he's going to do with the money... buy a big Mac, or a big bottle of rotgut.
If you want to "do the right thing" put a few bucks in an envelope and send to the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, or perhaps to the Disabled American Veterans. Those guys often don't get nearly the care and compensation they deserve for having put their lives on the line for the rest of us. Trust me, you have way more chance of your donation going to, and getting used for what you intended.

You are not doing this man a favor. You are enabling him to stay on the streets. While most think they are giving a dollar to another person who will use it to buy a meal, those of us who work in social services know otherwise. At least 95% (at least) of the time a homeless person will use the money for drugs or booze. So not only are you doing them a disservice but you are doing your community harm by enabling that person to stay on that freeway median or in front of a shopkeepers store.
The most important thing to understand is that these individuals are homeless for a reason, and it isn't economic marginalization. Chronically homeless people reject help that is out there.
Another thing people fail to realize is that there are many many services for the homeless.
Hot body in your avatar by the way.

Wow, I can't believe he said that. I mean, I do feel for them but come on... it's your hard earned money, you should give as much as you want. I agree with you, he should be grateful for what you gave him. A lot of people just walk by without noticing them. At times, when I didn't have anything on me but change, I've given a homeless person dollars too and they have always thanked me and even given me prayers.

Giving to a homeless person is like feeding a cat. Once you do it will never leave you alone. Homeless people are homeless because they are either mentally challenge or just plain lazy or on drugs. With the exception of the mentally challenge all other homeless people will take everything you have and not worry a stitch about you. Also be careful when approaching homeless people as they might rob or hurt you to get what they want. Peace.

In my country - Argentina - homeless people are often drunkards, junkies, etc., so I know that if I give him/her $2, he/she will end up using that money to buy drugs, beer, or others.
A dollar (approx. $3 pesos here) is a lot to give to a homeless person. Think of this - some people give as little as $0.25. But I can't say anything about that. At least they're giving them something.
I prefer giving food to homeless people, even if it's just a piece of gum - I know that the only way they can use that piece of food is eating it.

You give a homeless a dollar that very nice of you. He can eat something that cost a dollar. Because if you give more money to them they will buy drugs. I gave a homeless $2.00 and then someone else gave $10 and the homeless man went to the store to buy drugs

I would think if they are in immediate need of food and shelter that every little bit would be appreciated.
You did nothing wrong and you have a generous heart no matter how much you gave.
I would think the most important lesson would be not to lump all homeless people into a category with this guy.

I don't give out money to anyone. I prefer to support the organisations that are set up to try and help these people because then I know the money is going towards food and shelter, rather than going towards alcohol or some other unnecessary substance.
