Definitely YES! Some background info should be required, like age, health info and bank account info :)) We all know about abandonded children because parents could not afford to raise them, HIV infected etc etc

You need a license to own a tv but any and everyone can raise kids. Go figure.

I don't think a test is the only key. All parents or possible parents should be exposed to some level of childcare training and parenting class. Not saying like a strict detailed curriculum. But some awareness about what to expect at the various stages, a bit of psychology and innovative parenting techniques, and a wealth of support systems.

All parents need a little help sometimes, and some are in over their heads mainly because they didn't know what they were getting into. Some are naturals and some learn by trial and error. But it would be good if people had a little help up-front and continued support throughout.

Parenting is the toughest job in the world - and its the one job most people don't get training for.

You know I wish there was. But we cannot stop people from having children. And even if there was a test and the couple passed the test that does not mean that they cannot become corrupt in the future and corrupt their children. I mean I think that before someone becomes a parent then maybe they should take some parenting classes. Or they should make it a requirement for pregnant teens to take this class.

Yes, I think there should be a background check just like when you adopt. There are just too many people out there abusing and neglecting children and I think if you had to go thru a little red tape first, you may think twice about whether you really want to be a parent. I wouldn't mind going thru a test before having children if I knew their best interets was in mind. A test could only prove how ready you really are. Being prepared to be aparent is different than not knowing how to be one. Some people don't know, nor do they care. I agree that you don't know until you become one, but I also know that people who truly want children are prepared for whats to come.

But, what would they do to prevent people from becoming pregnant? However, there are some unfit parents out there. People don't understand how big of a job it is to have a child and go into parenthood to lightly. I wish there is something that can be done to prevent children being born to unfit parents but there is no way a test is going to prevent it.

Anyone can become parents so even if they fail the test what are you going to do with all the children they keep having??? I think testing would be a horrible idea

Yes, because there is alot of people out there reproducing that should not be. I cannot stand the parents that allow their children to do as they please as long as they are not bothering the parent. I know someone who allows her boys ages 10 & 8 to do what they want when they want as long as they are not in her hair and it really annoys me! Look at all the standards you have to meet just to be able to adopt a child. I think the same rules should apply to giving birth to your own.

Probably, I know some people right now that are complete dumb asses. She is 5 months preggos and neither of them have or want a job. They just live off welfare and some weed and cigs. AND they have 4 cats in a one bedroom apartment. Most likely the kid will be taken away f there's drugs in her baby's system. They are not ready at all to have a child.

No.

Some people are lousy parents but you can't tell until they ARE parents.

Plus I know too many wonderful people raised by total jerks who would not exist if their parents had been tested.

Its a human right to have kids - you can't take that away from people.

I don't agree with people having kids just so they can claim Child Benefit or get cheaper housing - if that really happens.. I think people should be given financial reward for deferring to have children.

How could this be enforced though?? It would be a bit like 'Big Brother is watching you' kind of thing if everyone was monitored before or during pregnancy. I agree in principle, my experience of parenting by my Mum wasn't exactly ideal!! (understatement of the year!)
