I was wondering if you can apply new wallpaper over old wall paper...really old wallpaper. I dont know anything about wallpapering and I just bought a house that has wallpaper in the stair well that leads to the second floor. I can see it from my living room and I want to put something fresh up.

You can if the surface is extremely smooth and even. However, it is better to steam off the old paper, smooth any bumps in the surface of the wall with drywall paste, and apply the wallpaper on a new surface. If the old wallpaper is really old, you may notice peeling in the joints and edges. If you put new wallpaper up over those loose pieces, it will never stay down flat and smooth.

Yes, you can wallpaper over wallpaper...alot of people do You can even paint over wallpaper if you want to. I don't recommend it. If your stair well is like mine with really high celings I can see why you would want to though. If the wall paper is in really good condition with no scratches or tears and the seams are really good you could go for it...I would make sure that your seams don't match the old seams though. Have fun and congrats on the new house!!

I have heard that it's a terrible idea. Try searching it on the home and garden tv website. Your best bet is to get some friends together and have a wallpaper tear down party and have a painting party the next week :) Maybe you could cook them all food for afterwards (you could do this in advance and heat it up the day of)

Judging from the layers of wallpaper in my old house, I would say yes! As long as you're not too fussy about bumps. In fact it leaves a cool history of design for anyone who wants to take it apart later.

Yes, if the first layer is on good and not peeling off anywhere. It worked for me. It sure beat having to peel off the old...

if its a dark color or patern you'll want to either pull it off or apply a neutral color over it so it doesn't bleed through your choice paper

you can , but it is strongly suggested you take the old one off first. Trust me on this, first hand knowledge that didn't work out.
