Use buckwheat or rice.

You are referring to Buckwheat hulls. I don't know where to buy those, but I use plain white rice and, using a funnel, pour it into an old clean sock or a small bag if you sew. Don't fill it up, leave lots of room. Then add a little lavender. Sew shut or tie a knot in the sock. These are quick and cheap and easy. They really help with cramps or sinus headaches and even neck pain. I have several sizes. Tummy pillows, eye pillows neck (sock) pillows. heat in micro for about 1-5 minutes depending on the size. It will stay warm for quite a while. Be careful not to nuke it too long, it will smell bad. But rice is cheap and you can make another one. Might make a nice gift for the Holidays, too.

I have made numerous heating pads that you warm in the microwave and stay warm for a long time. I just make the "bag" and fill about 2/3 to 3/4 full of uncooked rice. Cheap enough, easy to find and works well.

Yes, it's the same thing. You could also try brown rice. I go to bulkfoods.com for unusual foods that are not carried in the grocery. I think just any sort of grain with the hull will do. You can heat it in the microwave. Godloveya.

Rice is a better grain to use. Depending on the size of your pad, fill it with ordinary white rice stick it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. It stays warm longer and is reusable.I use this method for newborn puppies when they are'nt on the mother.Hope this helps you.
