I think they are both actions that engage your emotions and your intellect. I feel that 'forgive' is situation specific...in that it is applied to individual situations and times. To me 'forgiveness' is present -continuous almost... it is not just for this time but always. I hope I made sense. And of course one is a noun and one is a verb. lol

Forgiveness is the mental and/or spiritual process of ceasing to feel resentment or anger against another person for a perceived offence, difference or mistake, or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution. Forgiveness may be considered simply in terms of the feelings of the person who forgives, or in terms of the relationship between the forgiver and the person forgiven. In some contexts, it may be granted without any expectation of compensation, and without any response on the part of the offender

to grant pardon for or remission of (an offense, debt, etc.); absolve.
To give up all claim on account of; remit (a debt, obligation, etc.).
To grant pardon to (a person).
To cease to feel resentment against: to forgive one's enemies.
To cancel an indebtedness or liability of: to forgive the interest owed on a loan.
To pardon an offense or an offender.
