Ok,
The other day ago I met this guy. His last name is the same as my maternal grandmother's maiden name. This guy is from "cajun country" Louisiana, but his dad is from Indiana. My grandmother is from a small town about 30 minutes away from Birmingham, AL. How closely related do you think this guy and me are? The last name is Cox.

One reason why I was wondering, was because if we decided to date each other, would that be a problem? My family talks about our relatives and there hasn't been any mentioning of these people. One thing I wonder about with last names is if one person was given the last name of Smith, for example and then all people with the last name of smith in this world are related to him some how. or was there a time when last names were started that many men got the name of Smith, and then they started a line of descendants. I guess you also have factor in people being adopted, not taking the fathers name, and changing names. So, I guess the only real way to find out closely related you are to somebody is to take a DNA test right?

Sometimes people who have the same last name aren't related at all. You could begin by asking this guy if he knows your grandmother, her siblings, and her parents. Also, you could ask your parents and your grandmother by saying you met someone with the same last name and wondering if the two of you are related. If no one has heard of his name, then you probably aren't related. Another way is if he has similar face features as your grandmothers or other relatives.
A DNA test will prove if the two of you are related. But, do you really want to pay the cost of getting the test done?
Another way, is to trace your family tree. You and this guy can find out by resources at your library's genealogy department. This would be a good way to get to know him better and have fun together. The surname Cox is common and you may find that you aren't related at all. Good luck!
