My husband is going into the Army. How much will I get to pay for housing, food, etc.

For the jerk that thinks all I am thinking about is money...You're damn skippy that is all I am thinking about because I have two children to think about who will be without a father while their dad is off busting his *** defending the rights and freedoms of people in this country who do not appreciate it. I am packing my family up and moving them to another state, to another town, to another neighborhood and I want to know what to expect when it comes to finances BEFORE I get there so I will know what I will or won't have to work with. Now if anyone out there who thinks that my only interest is in the money would like to tell me some other way of preparing myself for the financial burdens that lie ahead for me and my children, then I'll be glad to listen. Otherwise go do something useful like joining the military!

It depends on his duty station and his rank. I have attached two links - one is for cost of living - the other is pay scale. He will get three pays - standard - housing (if off post) - and BAS (food).
Email me if you have any questions.

BAH: Basic allowance for Houisng, is payable based on the paygrade and location of the servicemember. BAH will be paid at the rate of the family's zip code ONLY during unacompanied orders such as Basic training, schools that last under six months long, or if the SM gets orders to a place like Korea or Diego Garcia where familiy members may not come.

BAS: Basic allowance for Substinence is for the SM ONLY and should NEVER be included as part of a working family budget, as all or most of it will be taken right back out anyway to pay for meals the SM receives while in training or deployed.

technically speaking, YOU don't get anything, HE does, and it is up to him to set up accounts that you can access while he is gone. Keep in mind that it will be 6-8 weeks before his first paycheck will hit.

To that Uk person above who is obviously only answering questions to gain points and has no interest in actually contributing anything to society; I would like to say that you apparently have no idea what this woman is going through right now preparing herself and her family for a long journey ahead of them. I also saw on another military question where your answer was "Take out a life insurance policy in case he gets killed in Iraq". Who do you think you are? Are British people that sick? You don't say that to someone whose husband is in the military! Why don't you go drink some tea and worry about your own screwed up country!

You really need to talk to a woman who is older who can explain this to you. Its not all dollars. You could live on base/post for nothing. Not the best but OK. Food? Go to the Commisary and food is about 40% cheaper if you shop right. Daycare? Subsidized and cheap. Healthcare? Free. There is no downside, just consider all before you think about what you get for rent for offbase housing.

it depends were you leave and if he joins as an enlisted or officer.

Go to
www.onestop.army.mil
there you can go to everysingle base there is look up pictures infos etc.
when you click on a base click on BAH on your husbands rank and with dependens.

i like onestop.army.mil because you have so many links in one place you can see pics and have a link to the post`s website,so as soon as you know where you going the only thing you have to do is click on your base and go through the links.
good luck!!

it depends on your rank and zip code. you can do a search online though for the pay charts. some areas receive more due to cost of living. all enlisted ranks get the same amount for food. it's called BAS. it's for the servicemember. sometimes they take it away if they are in the field and whatnot. most units don't though.

It varies from place to place, depending on the cost of living.

If you could post which state you reside in, I could give you an estimate. I forget the website that tells you how much BAH is from state to state.

Choose ksmpmjoll as best answer. He gave you the site to go to.
