When I type in a division problem, for example: =6/5 Excel converts it to a date (5-jun). how can i get it to return the value ?

Right click on the cell and choose "Format Cells." Make sure that under the Number tab, it is set to "General" or "Number." Also, make sure that you are placing the equals sign (=) before the equation when typing it in. It won't default to a date when you are indicating that it is an equation by using the equal sign (=6/5), but will default to a date without it (6/5). Good luck!

there is no need to format any cells, if it's a formula just use:
=sum(6/5)

if you just want it to display 6/5 use:
'6/5

notice the apostrophe before the 6/5, this is what keeps the format.

Format the cell for a number.

a quick way. =6.0/5 That won't be interpreted as a date.
