I have this friend who eats human hair. It is digusting to me. She told me out of privacy, but I think it may be a disease or something she cannot control. She has done it since she was little. Can't a giant hairball get stuck in her stomach or something? Is this harmful? Help me help her!

Your friend has a disorder and needs to be seen by a doctor! I know you don't want to be a tattle tale but talk to her parents in private and get her some help. Good Luck.

Here is some info for you -

Pica is an eating disorder typically defined as the persistent eating of nonnutritive substances for a period of at least 1 month at an age in which this behavior is developmentally inappropriate (eg, >18-24 mo). The definition occasionally is broadened to include the mouthing of nonnutritive substances. Individuals presenting with pica have been reported to mouth and/or ingest a wide variety of nonfood substances, including, but not limited to, clay, dirt, sand, stones, pebbles, hair, feces, lead, laundry starch, vinyl gloves, plastic, pencil erasers, ice, fingernails, paper, paint chips, coal, chalk, wood, plaster, light bulbs, needles, string, cigarette butts, wire, and burnt matches.

I've seen this disorder talked about on tv. I think it was the Discovery channel, but not sure. There was a lady on the show that had to have a 5pound hairball removed from her stomach. It was really disgusting to see. Your friend needs to see a Dr. Her body has a deficiency of some sort. It's kind of like the people that crave ice chips to eat.

Yes, I saw it on TV, the Oprah show I think. The girl had been eating her hair since childhood, when she got to be a teenager, she got very sick and they had to operate. They found a hair ball the size of a baby! Apparently, the body can't get rid of hair on its own. Your friend confided in you, so she may be asking for help.

I think that your friend needs help. Anyone who eats human hair definitely has some underlying problem that only a doctor can determine. Please, do your friend a favor and take her to her doctor. Good luck.

Just advice her. Tell her the same story that (mstrywmn) tell. I can just tell untill that. Then, she's in pain, bring her to the doctor and the God will do the rest.
