First is how did he get your number. Banks are not suppose to give out this information. The bank should have contacted you and informed you of their mistake.

That being said, you knew it wasn't your money and you shouldn't have spent it. You will have to pay it back. I just hope he lets you do that, and doesn't sue you for it. I would contact my bank and ask them what is to be done in this situation. It happens more than you think ~ I worked at a bank for seven years. Good Luck.

I'm not sure what the exact circumstances are. Was it a deposit or a wire transfer? Do you know the guy?

Regardless... You'll owe him the money. I think it's okay to tell him that you don't have it and you'll have to work out a payment plan.

I would also work with the bank to find out what your options were. Someone made a mistake and the bank should have caught that. See if they'll reimburse him and you can make payments to them.

In the future, verify deposits before you spend money.

Well you are going to have to pay the money back. you really should not have spent it in the first place if you knew it was not yours. If you do not give the money back I do not think you could get arrested but I do not know. But he can and probably will sue you. And than you would have to pay the money back plus court fees so I would take back what you bought or work out a payment plan with him or something because you do not want tot go to court.

this is a tricky question it isn't illegal to deposit money in an account any one can deposit money in any account I would say in the banks regulations it says you have to make good the money because it was done by error not by the bank but by the depositor altho the bank should get it straightened out. Are any honest people left?

You will have to pay it back. Even if it was a mistake, the money wasn't yours.

I'd be a little concerned about my bank making such mistakes & then giving my personal information to another customer.

You will have to get the money back. Taking money that does not belong to you is called: stealing. If you have a savings account in the first place, you must have some money.

Why would you spend it before you knew why it was there? You are going to jail.
