I'm getting ready to do a detox program and have read about some side effects. It's hard for me to get 2 days off in a row like they recommend. This week at the most, I have about a day and 1/2. What are some side effects that you have felt and have you done the sugar detox (which they say lasts 7-14 days) and the caffeine detox (which lasts about 2 days), at the same time? What are some methods that you used to cope?

When I started Atkins I gave up both sugar and caffeine. I was extremely tired and my arms and legs felt heavy like they were made of lead. The caffeine withdrawal gave me headaches.

Basically I just waited it out. I still went to work (physical job) even though I felt like crap. Once it was over I felt great. If you stick it out, it will be worth it.

Other people have reported various flu-like symptoms.

I started Atkins diet about 10 days ago which I did about 5 years ago too. It is a diet that works for me although I know a lot of people say you put the weight back on when you go back to eating regularly. The most significant side effect from stopping the caffeine mainly was the headache. I had a splitting one for 2 days. But then it went away. I am using equal for sweetener. I took my migraine medication Maxalt for the headache and it almost didn't work but I got through it. The other side effect seems to be a bit of constipation so I made some smooth move tea which works for that situation. Once you get past the initial few days life is a groove. I do not find it difficult to live without sugar and caffeine and excessive carbs. The Atkins diet seems to satisfy me and the pounds slowly roll off. It will probably take me three months to lose the 15 pounds that I need to and it will probably take me several years to put it back on so it will be worth it. Good luck in your efforts!

I don't know about sugar, but caffeine... I have what is called IBS. I had to get rid of coffee and it was really hard. I had headaches for the first three days, lack of energy in the morning and I felt sleepy all day long. I could not detox from one day to the next, I gradually reduced the amount of cups of coffee until I had only one and then got it off completely.
One thing I have learn from the experience, I have now a LOT of respect for normal people, like me, that have no access to a fancy detox facility and they clean themselves just with they will and inner power.

I am on a long-term no sugar and caffeine diet (I still cheat on the sugar with chocolate once in a while and since there is caffeine in chocolate - oh well).

I have never heard of a detox for those - just abstinence. Check out www.hufa.org - the symptoms link, for symptoms that might result if the detox throws you into a low blood sugar condition. If you eat a sugar-balanced diet (moderate protein, low glycemic carbs and good fat), you might see minimal symptoms from the detox.
