The Federal Trade Commission is trying to fix this problem with companies offering "free" credit reports. The greatest example of this false advertising is the site http://www.freecreditreport.com
By law, the three consumer reporting agencies were mandated to set up a system so you can get your report for FREE. No gimmics, credit cards, memberships...nothing.

Now what we have to do is educate the ignorant morons who come on to Yahoo and respond to this very question with all sort of other sites.
Margie thinks it's all a credit card number scam. Personally I think there are people who represent these companies and get a kickback every time some poor sucker reads their message and goes to the site.
Everyone needs to note something about Yahoo Answers. There are a lot of people who are not representing your interestes when they answer your question. A reliable responder will give his sources of information, so you can verify the accuracy. Just be aware of that.

Personally, I think it's a ploy to get your credit card number. But I have found a way to get your credit report, once a year, free. Call 877-322-8228. You will get a computer generated voice that will get your information and you can get your reports from all three major credit reporting agencies mailed to you once a year for free.
