There are far too many criminals getting paroled or slap-on-the-wrist sentences because we simply do not have enough room to warehouse the scumbags. We need to alleviate some of this overcrowding by building more prisons. It doesn't have to cost alot. Sheriff Joseph Arpaio has his inmates living in tents.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!!:

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

I think Sheriff Joseph Arpaio is a great sheriff, I do not understand why it is not a requirement for all law enforcement to be like him. If he ran for president I would vote for him.

In some ways we need more prisons, so people don't get away with things, that are done and should have jail time for. A lot of people get off with a smack on the hand because they do not have the room to put them when they go to jail. I totally agree that they shouldn't have all the great things that they give them in the jail houses, no should be no joy time, they aren't there to have fun! In another way, they should make punishment worse for these repeated criminals that keep doing things to put them in jail.

Incarceration of a prisoner can cost upwards of 35K annually. Sure we can cut costs, cut costs, and cut costs, but the issue is...

Why incarcerate individuals for victimless crimes?

We allow those convicted of larceny, writing bad checks, etc. to opt for prison time instead of financial retribution. Why?

We incarcerate individuals for minor drug infractions. Why?

THe issue is not MORE prisons, the issue is... Why do we need so much prison space in the first place?

We are too quick to want to "punish" someone by incarcerating them. If they are not a threat to society, there is no need for incarceration.

We need new methods of punishment... community service, financial retribution, etc.

Why feed, house and clothe someone while they repay their debt to society, put em on a repayment plan through money or time.

My 2 cents.

I think the sherrif's tough rules and work program is good, but what about when they get out? there needs to be programs to require and ensure these prisoners are becoming productive working members of society after parolled, or else they go right back in... for us to take care of.

No, we don't need more prisons. What we need are better deterrents. The threat of having your hand cut off for stealing is a good start and when you get the death sentence it means you die. Dispense with the "life" sentences. If the crime is so horrible that you deserve - and get - life, then kill them!
