The best thing to use is Vaseline (petroleum jelly). Some cats actually will lick a gob of it off your finger, they seem to like it! For others, you kind of have to shove it in their mouth (kind of hold the head still as you can, wipe it off your finger onto the side of their mouth/teeth). Do it every three days or so for a few weeks, then go down to once a week, then as needed. You will be amazed at the difference it makes! Vet-recommended. Don't bother with the hairball formula food.

Get a hairball remedy from your local vet or pet store. there are several different brands out there, and any of them will work. It will come in a creamy syrup type in a tub. I am currently using this along with some malt flavored hairball treats for my kitten (4 months old) and he has not had a hairball since I gave him the stuff.

Could you brush your cat and perhaps it would get all his hair away from him without him licking it off? In the UK you can buy special medicine but don't know about South Africa - you could speak to the vet again. Good luck.

It's normal, just groom him and keep giving him the hairball formula.
