I feed my terrier dry food and before each meal he tentatively chooses a piece of food and carries it off to a private corner to eat. Then he will return to the bowl and eat from it until he's done. What is he doing?

I dont know for sure, but I know that my dogs do that also. I have a Jack Russell Terrier, a Border Collie, and a Yorkie.. and they all 3 do the same thing. Ive also noticed before that my Border Collie usually eats the same pieces of food before any others, like he has a taste preference or something.

Maybe its a breed thing, but I doubt it. Maybe our dogs are just really picky eaters. Either that or theyre shy eaters. Just like some people.

xx

My dog does the same thing, only he does this individually about 3-4 times before eating from his bowl. He's tasting (away from the main dish so he can really get the smell of just that piece?) or just has his own style! Cute, heh?

Don`t worry, it`s nothing serious. My mom`s dog always do the same thing too. She does it to taste the food first, if she likes it, she eat it, if she doesn`t like it, she just ignore the food. And sometimes she even buries a piece of her food and then she eats it later (yuck). Of course we tell her not to do it, but she is very persistent. No doubt dogs have personalities. So, don`t worry, your dog is not doing anything out of the ordinary.
