The glycemic index is about foods high in carbohydrates. Foods high in fat or protein don't cause your blood glucose level to rise much. The glycemic index is about the quality of the carbohydrates, not the quantity. It lets you know what you should eat to keep you blood sugar more stable and body more healthy
The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach - ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.
* Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
* Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
* Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
* Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
* Use Basmati or Doongara rice
* Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
* Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

I bought the book cause I thought it would have a glycemic index in it. It is based on the Zone diet. The Zone diet worked to get my blood sugars under better control but did not lose me the weight. I had better weight loss results with the Protein Power diet (Eades). It is very similar to the Zone diet - had better charts to show portion control of carbohydrates, and deals with ounces not "portions".
The best diet for me so far is a modified "Yeast Syndrome" (Trowbridge) diet, but that is because I also have a systemic yeast syndrome in addition to my diabetes.
Best wishes.

in real life there is no such thing as GI diet.
first of all, glycemic index rates the various food according to rate at which they are converted into blood sugar (glucose).all foods containing carbs effect blood sugar.
the notion of GI diet comes out of the thinking that if a person consumes low carb (or foods with low gltcemic value) then his blood sugar will not be adversely effected.
one should count calories and carbs in foods rather than getting worried about GI . eating foods with less carbs will not effect blood sugar.

Hi there!
It works by keeping you from eating comfort foods that tend to leading to binging like sugar and fats.
If you stick to it, it should work for you. Better yet is to be more liberal in your diet but keep it to no more than 1500 calories per day. Then try to stay active.
I also suggest that you find someone knowledgeable to encourage and motivate you to help you reach your goal. This really helps.
I believe this answers your question, but if not, you may email me.
Good luck on your diet and fitness goals!
