I think you still would get a ticket for going through the light. When an ambulance comes up behind you, you are supposed to move to the side - not go through a red light. That just creates a dangerous situation for basically no reason. I think it would be better to not move at all and just let the ambulance go around you. It happens all the time!

I've never heard of that. It seems unlikely that you would get a ticket for allowing an emergency vehicle to get through. What are you supposed to do? Make the ambulance or police wait behind you until the light changes and you have the chance to pull ahead and pull over? Are you sure about this?

Going through a red light is a violation, the ambulance and police know what to do. If you were in the way they would direct you on what they wanted you to do. Everything is ridiculous, you do not have emergency lights on your vehicle to warn other cars of your presents.

Yes you could. It is an absolute offence. That means you are guilty if you go through a red light. The reasons for doing so are not relevant. A newspaper recently reported a case of a driver who got out of the way as you describe and was charged!!! This is a perfect example of where the police did not use a sensible discretion.

Unfortunately there are people who will exploit every situation to their own advantage. While it sounds stupid, they have to have it that way because otherwise you'd have people racing through the red light at the first sound of a siren.
If you heard of a situation where a person was fined for allowing an emergency vehicle through then I'd contact the local paper and get the case investigated.

That is true my son-in-law had exactly that situation moved out of the way to let an ambulance go through and got a ticket. He went to court and told them the circumstances they fined him but did not endorse his license. I think that the Magistrate does not have choice with the fine and of course you do need evidence.
Oh it was a camera on the lights so the ticket was automatic

You will NOT be fined if you move to let an emergency vehicle through(lights flashing, siren going). If you hold it up as some have suggested, it could mean the difference of someone living or dying. Do YOU want to make that choice??? Move over and let them through. You don't have to continue across the junction, just make space for them.

If you are pulled over after going through the light, the officer will probably let it fly because you were getting out of the way of an emergency vehicle. If you do get a ticket, the court may waive it if you protest it. Email me at johnluisduffy@yahoo.com

I have heard of cases where there is a camera on the traffic light. People have been done for this.

If you dont, you WILL get done for obstruction.

If it happenns to you, make a note of the reg number of the police car and note the time. If you can prove that its true then you should not get done. Go to court if you have to.
