I often think that people are staring at me and I get really uncomfortable. A lot of times lately, this has caused me to spend more time alone than I normally would. I never noticed this problem before, but it has been really annoying lately, and I wondered if anyone knows what may cause such paranoia, and what I could do to overcome it.

I should also mention, it is usually around people I know, like family. It doesn't bother me to go out places. I used to have a fear of being stared at in public places, but I've gotten over that.

If you have a low blood sugar condition (hypoglycemia), resulting from high insulin production (hyperinsulinemia), this fear could be one way your brain stimulates the release of sugar into your system, when you are low.
www.hufa.org has some basic info, but I would say, start keeping a journal of what time of day you feel the uncomfortableness. If you see a pattern - and it links to before meals, that may be one sign of low blood sugar.
Also, check with a trusted family member - that will kindly tell you the honest truth - if your appearance and hygiene are acceptable. You may be feeling stared at because you are being stared at.

I can only answer the first part.Yes,I've heard of it because I've experienced it.It doesn't really bother me,now. When I was younger,I wouldn't go anywhere alone and eye-contact with anyone other than who I was with was out of the question.I just KNEW everyone was staring at me and thinking horrible things about me.Now I just don't care.Oh,does it matter what kind of people you're around?I found that when I was young,it was mostly people just a little bit older than myself that bothered me.Like, late teens. As I got older, the age of the "stare-ers" stayed the same.I'm thinking maybe it was because I never thought I'd found acceptance among people that age.Might have had something to do with school.I don't know.I just know I'm better now.Try not to isolate yourself. That will just make it worse and it will last longer.I know from experience.Good luck.

I often feel the same way as you, the strangeness of being stared at. It is very uncomfortable and uneasy feeling. Specially if I don't know the person who is staring, its even more weird to me. Why do people stare anyways? All I can say is what I do, just give them a good stare back and if you feel bold make a goofy face, they'll stop.

Lots of people are uncomfortable when you stare at them, that is why it is not polite to stare at people. Don't worry, it is a normal reaction. Try to be indifferent. It won't hurt you.

Sounds like social anxiety. My sister has this, takes medication for it though. I would just try to go out a little at a time, maybe this will help. But seeking professional help is best.
