Duet 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
31 Thou shalt not do so unto Yahweh your Father: for every abomination toYahweh, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
We were commanded to keep the laws of Yahweh strictly!
Genesis 3:1-7—
1 Now the serpent was more subtle and crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh had made. And she said to the woman; Has Yahweh indeed said: You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said to the serpent; We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, Yahweh has said: You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, or you will die.
4 And the serpent said to the woman; You will not surely die.
5 For Yahweh knows that in the day you eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods (elohim), knowing righteousness and evil.
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was desirable for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they had sinned; they had violated Yahweh's Laws. Because they had not kept Yahweh's Laws, they were afraid.
Revelation 12:9—
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world. She was cast out into the earth, and her angels were cast out with her.
Notice, Genesis 3:7 shows that they sinned. The Theological Word Book of the Old Testament by Harris, Archer and Waltke Volume 2, page 695, shows that the Hebrew root word oram, which was translated naked in the King James Version, is correctly translated sin. Sin is the transgression or breaking of Yahweh's Laws.
I Yahchanan 3:4—
Whoever commits sin, transgresses also the Law; for sin is the transgression of the Law.
Daniyl 7:25—
And he will speak great words against Yahweh, and will wear out; mentally attack to cause to fall away, the saints of Yahweh, and think to change the Feasts and holy days, and Laws; and they will be given into his hand until a time, and times, and the dividing of time.
This religion changes Yahweh's Laws. Remember, she devours the whole earth which means she has changed the Laws of Yahweh in the minds of all people on earth. That's exactly what the last revelation given to mankind shows is the case for this time period. The teaching that mankind does not need to keep or adhere to the inspired Laws of Yahweh has been placed in the minds of all who dwell on the earth in this generation. They have been taught to accept and partake in a mixture of righteousness and evil, which is the same teaching Cain, being led by Satan, presented.

I think you've thought through the issues very well. Ultimately, the answer is "a little bit of both." At verses 17 - 19, Moses begs God not to kill the people, quoting God's words at Exodus 34:6-7 back to Him: 17 And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, 18 ‘The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” However, God's response to Moses' supplication does not indicate the people are forgiven at this time, since they still must bear their punishment: 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. Therefore, God made it plain that He was willing to forgive the Jews as a nation, but that ALL of them must face punishment: those who actively rebelled would die during the 40 years of wandering; their children would receive the punishment of having to wander through the desert for 40 years. No one, including Joshua and Caleb, went completely unpunished. It's important to notice that God didn't include Moses in the category of those who would live -- that's a detail many overlook, which causes unnecessary confusion for some readers when Moses dies just before the people cross over into the Land.

2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
2 Peter 2 and 3 instruct us about false teachers and false prophets, who attempt to bring "destructive heresies" into the Church. Peter admonishes Christians at 2 Peter 3:17 and 18 that: "You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen."
Galatians 1:6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
Peace.

I do not know of any passage that strictly prohibits it, however it does say to not allow false religions and teachers to sway you from the truth. I imagine it would be possible upon reading another religion's text's or tenets you might be brought into conflict with your own convictions. I personally feel that if your convictions are strong enough, then reading about other religions will not move you from your faith.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exodus 23:13 And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
Judges 10:13 Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
When you look at other faiths, for the most part they do not serve the Almighty God. Some say that they do, but they do not include Jesus as being the son of God, so in turn if you cannot accept Jesus as the son of God, you are not serving and worshipping the Almighty God.

No passage in particular, but several passages sort of discuss it. It says never to mention the name of another diety. It also cautions against becomming onvolved with outsiders as they may influence you. But, all this depends on your own spiritual strength/comittment. Even Jesus hung out with prostitutes. And loved them & they conformed to His image instead of the other way around. Remember, love never fails.

Ecclesiastes 12:12
As regards anything besides these, my son, take a warning: To the making of many books there is no end, and much devotion [to them] is wearisome to the flesh.
