I am about to buy a car, it being my first. It will be used as a to-from car mainly to work and school, maybe the occasional trip out of town on weekends. I have a limited amount of money(around a grand), what type of car should i buy?

A good cheap reliable car would be a Honda civic or Subaru Legacy. Early 90's for a grand. You have to look hard to find one. Private sales will be your best bet. Good Luck!

None...1 Grand is not going to do much for you as far as minimizing monthly payment... Now remember gas will cost you money and so will auto insurance...You are better off saving more money, taking public transportation and just renting a car on those few weekends a year you will be leaving town... Buying a car is not an investment...Soon as you drive it off the lot you have lost about 30 per cent of its value as it now a Used car...

You be needing a miracle, but it can happen to you too.

Look and seek through newspapers, talking to local churches and old folk places. These places usually have mint autos sitting around and waiting to be bought. I got lucky and found a MINT garage kept and rust free 1966 GMC pickup with pnly 35K miles.

The ideal car is for you to buy replacement parts for the vehicle at your local auto supply places. Also, look for autos which are a dime a dozen - Honda, Kia, Fords, Chevy, etc - do your homework! You get a car like BMW, Benz and anything sounding expensive - YOU CAN'T AFFORD the insurance and up keep.

some thing that is cheap to run built like a tank and easy to repair. must be common and every day beast.
As it's first car it will end up banged around so don't be to fussy about body (NO RUST) you will end up with dings and paint work
scratched. Join a road service mob and get them to check it over for you BEFORE YOU BUY and don't be pressured. So good luck and good hunting,, Tanks are great in accidents other cars hate em and it could save your life

find something reliable..my opinion would be 80-early 90s japanese (honda, toyota, nissan...possibly subaru)...and get the ugliest one you can find. it will be the cheapest reliable car you get because most people are willing to pay more for a car that looks better. it will also keep you from being tempted buy cosmetic stuff for it. i owned my 86 toyota PU for 7 years..put probably 70k miles on it (speedometer was broken when i got it). paid $300 and a new set of tires ($100). it was the ugliest truck ive ever seen, was owned by a painter and you could definetly tell.

Cars are around with good deals.A grand is plenty to get a good usable car, example;I just got a real nice 97 Grand Am for $800.00.Had to offer cash and the woman took it so you too can find a deal.

Since you will need insurance and you will want to do a few repairs to it as soon as you get it, then I think you should look for something in the want ads for around $600.
