Saddam Hussein's trial and outcome is a milestone in the Iraqi people's efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law, and it's a major achievement for this young democracy. Political change takes time. In Iraq, the mindset of the people is sick much like that of an alcoholic. Although the alcoholic wants help and wants to change, much more has to happen before the alcoholic can become sober. It is not the US that is failing in this case. The US has opened a HUGE door for these people to find freedom. It has opened the door for democracy (removal of Saddam Hussein), woman's rights (removal of Hussein's cruel, oppressive, womanizing "police" force), freedoms of speech, expression, etc., and several other freedoms that would not have been given to this country. Think about it. The people in Iraq are beginning to have a voice. They have voted. They have spoken out against us and for us (freedom of speech). They are just now experiencing the freedom they never had. Change is scary, and, OF COURSE, they will (at first) want to go back to the way things were because they knew what to expect; however, when the seeds that America has planted are watered by Iraqi reformers... this democracy will grow. We cannot expect immediate results and that is a lot of the problem with those who are looking at America's work. They do not see that sometimes- like an alcoholic- Iraq will go back to its old ways; however, the change that has already occurred in that country will never cease to open the eyes of the people, and- just like the former Soviet Union- it will take time to grow a free nation from an oppressed people.

Winning was never a possibility. Colin Powell knew it (that is what he meant when he told Bush, “if you break it, you own it”); Bush’s father knew it (he says so in his book ‘A World Transformed’); and every Middle East expert in the world knew it (the most optimistic still only gave Bush a 50-50 chance).
Everyone with any knowledge of the region at all knew that the most likely outcome of removing Hussein from power would be a civil war. And, it is only going to get worse.
How do you stop 25 million people who are intent on having a civil war? In the short term, you do what Hussein did, hold them down with brutal force. In the long run, there is nothing you can do to stop it.
The neocon’s plan that Bush implemented was a stupid idea doomed to fail – and failing is what Bush does best.

I believe we're failing. Our death toll is high and getting higher. We aren't "winning." Our soldiers are more on the defensive than offensive. The country is in turmoil and when we pull out there will be civil war. Not all countries work well under a democracy & who are we to impose our type of government on others. There are 8 world leaders determined to be worse than Saddam; are we to fight everyone?
This war reminds me of Vietnam. We didn't win that one either. We fought there to keep communism out of Vietnam then we pulled out and the entire country was under their control.

Failing miserably! The US military is not designed for occupation and can not win a war like the one in Iraq. It's time to leave

These people don't want democracy, they are used to being ruled by an iron tomb. Hussein had to be tough or he would lose control to some other factions. America should never got involved in this, now we have a civil war going and it could destabilize the whole area. We should claim victory and head for home.
