Not that the effort is worth the reward or anything, but just out of pure curiosity.

Unlike 'regular' corn chips that are made with cooked tortillas Frito's are made with a still wet uncooked dough like what you would use in making tamales. I've made both types of corn chips before and the bagged are certainly easier but the fresh chips taste much better and are *much* cheaper than the bagged. If you should decide to make your own use a pastry bag with a ribbon tip to squirt the masa into 350 degree corn oil.

Yeah, but you can add your own spices to taste, e.g, onion/garlic/chili powder.

1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup boiling water
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon butter OR margarine

1.Preheat oven to 450*F (230*C).
2.Combine cornmeal, salt and any other spices in a mixing bowl.
3.Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and stir.
4.Add butter and stir until melted.
5.Add remaining 3/4 cup boiling water, while stirring constantly.
6.Drop mixture by heaping teaspoonfuls onto a well-greased baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Makes approximately 3 dozen chips.
