When I switch on the TV, at first the picture starts very narrow and gradualy widens out to the whole screen. Is this an indication that the TV is on its way out?

Sounds like its taking its time to warm up. Shouldn't need reaplcing immediately, ig you can stand to wait each time you turn it on, however its not got long left. It'll be cheaper to buy a new set than consider repair. Just think of it as a perfect excuse to buy a brand spanking new set, perhaps even a HDTV if you have the funds.

Two major circuits in a TV are the horizontal output and the vertical output. If you have a narrow vertical band during warmup, the horizontal output circuit is getting tired...or rather the circuit that supplies power to it. It could be as simple as a flakey cap (capacitor). I'd have it checked out now before it goes altogether...the fix could be less than $5 for parts (the cap) with $50-100 for labor (depending on where you take it). Then again, it could be more...it just depends on the TV make and if the power-supply circuit is integrated or not. If you really like the TV and the picture is good, it's probably worth the money to at least have it checked out.

Waiting until it goes later may cost you more money as failures involving power circuits can be cumulative.

Yes. I would say the line-output transformer and its associated circuit may be getting 'tired'. Don't even think of a repair. The parts will be 'integrated, probably unavailable, and not cost-effective. Just buy a new set.

well if it wasn't doing it before then i would take that as an indication that something is going on. Could be the picture tube or some ristor or capacitor

Certainly is though it could be repaired. The repair though could cost so much that you could put that cost towards a new one.
