People who practise methods called Advaita, or Non Duality, are seeking enlightenment. Some people have spontaneously experienced a "dimension" of reality, where there are no opposites, including the opposite of self and other. This is said to be the beginning of enlightenment, as all perception of duality, opposites, self and God, are an illusion. This, they believe is the original error, all humans must transcend. Buddha is said to have reached this state. Others are Ramana Maharshi, and Nisargardatta Maharaj. These are three of the most famous.
This is what most meditators are seeking. This is what is talked about in the Tao, Zen, and the Baghavad Gita.
It is not the same as salvation, and is primarily found in the Eastern Religions.
Having been a student of enlightenment, I have returned to salvation, with Jesus as my savior. However, now when I read Jesus' words, I see that this non duality was included in who He is. My Father and I are One.
Oh Happy Day!

Enlightenment (or illumination) broadly means "the acquisition of new wisdom or understanding". However, the English word covers two concepts which can be quite distinct: religious or spiritual enlightenment (German Erleuchtung) and secular or intellectual enlightenment (German Aufklärung). This can cause confusion, since those who claim intellectual enlightenment often reject spiritual concepts altogether.
In religious use, enlightenment is most closely associated with South and East Asian religious experience, being used to translate words such as (in Buddhism) Bodhi or satori, or (in Hinduism) moksha). The concept does also have parallels in the Abrahamic religions (in the Kabbalah tradition in Judaism, in Christian mysticism, and in the Sufi tradition of Islam).
In secular use, the concept refers mainly to the European intellectual movement known as the Age of Enlightenment.

Enlightenment is a word beginning with the letter "e" and has 13 letters. If I say what I think, I would probably be censored by a false violation reporter. I am trying not to break the community guidelines, by saying anything that anyone can disagree with.

The Vedic literature proclaims: TAMASI MA JYOTIR GAMA. “Do not stay in darkness, come into the light.” Here darkness means ignorance and light means spiritual knowledge of our real identity as pure spirit souls, eternal servants of God.
We also find the following verse in the Vedas:
Om ajnana timrandhasya jnananjaya shalakaya
Chakshur unmilitam yena tasmai shri gurave namah
“I was born in the darkness of ignorance, but my spiritual master came and forcefully opened my eyes with the torchlight of knowledge. I offer my respectful obeisances unto him.”
For enlightenment Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead recommends that we approach a bonafide spiritual master and learn from him. This is explained in the Bhagavad-gita 4.34:
tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darshinah
"Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth."
In another verse the Lord speaks also about enlightenment as coming from within the heart by His mercy (Bhagavad Gita 10.11)
tesam evanukampartham
aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
jnana-dipena bhasvata
"To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance."

Hi, put simply it is the belief that there is no creator God and that man is only responsible to himself therefore it is paganism, and it gained ground and contributed to the French revolution, some authors contribute enlightenment to Jewish freemasonry.
