You will need to be sponsored by a prospective employer. However, you will also need to educate yourself on the rules so that you understand the process. I have attached two links which are a start.
I recall reading an article a few months ago that employment visas are increasingly hard to come by, especially in the IT field. If you haven't already, you might want to search out a forum where you can ask questions, as well as finding out who the amenable employers are.
Beware that a lot of IT jobs, even the skilled ones, are being outsourced to Asia now. You will want to make sure that the salary you are offered is sufficient to fund your lifestyle in the USA. Remember, such things as healthcare cost much more than the UK, even with insurance. The cost of dental care here is a sick joke in my opinion so if you do get a visa, make sure you visit the dentist before you move! I'm not joking with this. I didn't do that five years ago when I emigrated and now I'm paying for it, big time.
Bear in mind that costs of living are vastly different across the USA (more marked than in the UK). You might earn $50-60,000 (more depending on your experience and education) in the Research Triangle area of central North Carolina. That will give you a nice enough standard of living. However, that salary in California's Silicon Valley would keep you in poverty. Sorry if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs, but thought I'd throw in the extra info anyway. When I moved here, the stuff I've mentioned came as a bit of a shock, even though I thought I was prepared for it.
Good luck in your search.

Besides finding a company to sponsor an H1 visa, there are two other routes:
You can join the US Military, and that will make you a legal resident alien. I think after 3 years of service, you can apply for citizenship. (With the way things are going now, I would try for the Navy!) With your skills and obvious intelligence, I think any of the service branches would be happy to get you.
The other route is to visit the states and find yourself a girlfriend. Marry her and then you can apply for a green card. After 3 years here, you can apply for citizenship. (But you REALLY have to marry her and live together, etc. Fake it and you get kicked out forever.) This is a sure-fire route, since there are plenty of young unwed or divorced mothers of small children who would be happy to marry a fellow with good prospects who doesn't beat them, etc. Try trailer parks and welfare offices.

First of all. Why you want to emigrate to the USA ?!
Are you nuts ?
I used to live in both countries (in the usa - 2yrs, in the uk - 1,5 yrs) and Im sure England is not bad.
Come on, us dollar is pretty down at the moment, you are not going to make much more money than in the UK.
By the way , there is no freedom in states, its a police state, so many restrictions and rules you have to obey, it aint fun, man.
I finally chose life in Prague, CZ.
by the way, you can be illegal there, nobody cares, nobody gives a damn, so just get on plane (god bless you)

You haven't seen America lately. You will be better off staying where you are. We are over ran with mexicans and more are coming everyday.
It seems that our government has turned a blind eye to the problem and Most Americans Complain but wont do anything about it
Might be better to wait and see what the mexican government will do once they take over. Wont be much of a wait.
Americans think that going to vote will be the answer, that just shows how lazy they are.

I would suggest that you contact: 1) the American Embassy in the UK; americanembassy.co.uk - 28K. 2) The UK Embassy in America; http://www.britainusa.com/consular/embassy/embassy.asp (this serves Great Britain & Northern Ireland) or 3) www.ivs-uk.com (this covers visa/immigration to US).
One of the websites should help you or lead you to one that can. Good luck.

First, you have to get hired by a company here in the U.S. that is willing to hire you. You have to apply first. Go to their website. Once hired, hopefully they will sponsor you under a workers visa. Once in the U.S. you can apply for a greencard but I think you have to be here a few years before you can think of doing that. Go to the U.S. immigration website for complete info.

Are you not aware of our (USA) border patrol/immigration policies, which are a hot topic right now? We do not need more illegals. Do your research and find out what the LEGAL procedures are for migrating to our great country. We have waaay enough ILLEGALS here. We are still the greatest country in the world. Yes, we have laws/rules, but only because they are necessary or we would be like all the other countries whose citizens are trying to get out of their country.
http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
Go to the above website. Read it thoroughly and make a decision based on the LEGAL procedures for entering this country. We welcome you if you are LEGAL; go home or to another country if you are NOT LEGAL.
Good luck to you!
