I have a 7 year old great Dane that has a little bit of a bladder problem. We haven't changed her diet at all. Sometimes when she sleeps she'll urinate just a little. SOmetimes when we bring her back inside she'll also leak a little going upstairs.
We havent brought her to the vet yet but wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this problem. I'm away from home right now and hoped I could give my wife a few things to try until I can get home and take her to the vet.

tks for the "take her to the vet answer" I think I mentioned I'd be doing that. Kind of hard to do being on a different continent at the moment...I had hoped someone else had also experienced this problem.

Ahhh...thank you!! I forgot to mention that part..the original owner told me that she had a litter of puppies that were all still born and because of some other complications from the birth she had to be spayed ( not sure what those complications were). You're probably right!!! It was my guess too. My wife has been really worried about it and it'll cal her a bit I think. I'll be taking her to the vet as soon as Im home.

More than likely it is spay incontinence. Hormone pills should take care of the problem.

Talk with your vet about getting your dog started on Proin or DES.
Since she has been spayed she no longer has estrogen hormones and those help keep the bladder muscle tight.
Proin can correct the problem.
It takes some time to get the dosage figured out but things will be fine once you get her on meds and regulated.
It is common in females who have been spayed.

I have a 7 year old Weimaraner mix who leaks when she is lying down and then gets up. My vet said it was most likely incontinence caused by a weakening of the pelvic muscles after being spayed last year.

Well 7 years for a giant breed is already old. She probably just can't control her bladder as well as she used to. Take her for a check up and ask the vet to help you out.

I see two possiblilities - a bladder infection - treatable with antibiotics or spayed ***** inconence (which is possible for intact females & male too) which it treatable with hormone replacement or PPA. I've had a girl on PPA "pulse" treatment (not continous but at inervals) for 5 years and had the bladder infection on a different dog, both problems were solved.

Most pet supply stores sell doggie diapers for use with dogs that have bladder problems or for when a dog is in heat. There is a hole for the tail so it won't hurt the tail.
