This year will just be hubby, son, daughter-in-law and I--so I'm just going to have a turkey breast (since no one likes dark meat). However, in years past we had lots of people--the biggest turkey was one we raised ourselves and he was 28 lbs!!!!! I will never, ever, ever attempt to do that again!! I got up at 3 a.m. to stuff that sucker and get him in the oven--needless to say dinner was NOT ready when I said it would be--soooo 3 hours later--after they'd eaten the relish plate, cheese plate, and were eyeballing the pie I carved off what was cooked and fed them (thank God I had a separate casserole with stuffing cause the one in the bird wasn't done yet!!) put Mr. Bird back in the oven and about 10 p.m. it was perfect!!!!

I've always gone by the rule of thumb of 3/4 lb per person, but also consider how much leftovers you want, too. I'd much rather have too much turkey than be short. Based on 3/4 lb. per person, the MINIMUM I would buy w/b 15 lbs., but I'd probably go 20-25.
I've never cooked for so many, but I usually buy a 12-14 lb. bird for 6-8 people.
good luck!

I bake a 20lb. turkey for about the same amout of people. 14 adults and lots of kids ranging from 10 to 19. It has always been plenty with all the other trimmings.

Rule of thumb on turkey portions - 1 pound per person. So a 20 pounder should do. Remember a portion of the weight is the bones............

To be safe, I would go with at least 25 lbs. That gives 1lb per person with plenty left over. With all the trimmings and dessert, you will have TONNES of food, and everyone will go home happy and completely stuffed. Watch out for those flying buttons!! :)

The bigger the better as guests want to take home some leftovers. you'll want leftovers. so at least 30 lbs. if you cannot find a large enough one at the supermarket then order one from a butcher. but it does have to be ordered. a 30lb bird will take up too much room in your freezer. consider the butcher and order this week.

Turkey Serving Guide - How much turkey to serve per person
When planning your Thanksgiving turkey dinner it can be overwhelming wondering how much to serve per person. You will want to have enough for each person to have at least two servings and enough for turkey leftovers.
Up to 12lbs. = 1lb. per person
Over 12lbs. = 3/4lb. per person
Bone in breast = 1/2lb. per person
Boneless breast or role = 1/3lb. per person
