Potatoes, including sweet potatoes are only fattening when you load them with butter, sour cream, brown sugar etc. The potato itself is a healthy carb. You can regulate how bad they become for you by what you put on them.

All potatoes contain 4 calories per gram, just like any other carbohydrate or protein. (Including pure sugar!) What makes them fattening is when you add lots of butter or sour cream, since fats contain 9 calories per gram.

Cooked potatoes also are easily digested which means they get converted into sugar and absorbed into your blood stream very quickly. Some people think that you are better off getting your carbohydrates from whole grains and raw vegetables, which get digested slower.

Not really. Lots of health buff people I know eat boiled sweet potatoes as substitutes for other carbs like potatoes and rice. During my gym days, majority of the people there ate sweet potatoes at home or bring them as snack in case they get hungry. My mom also eats them in the past and lost weight. Well, just be careful of eating too much 'cause it can give you lotsa bad gas lol.

It also depends on how you prepare them. Deep fried with tonnes of salt would be more fattening than steaming or dry roasting (not coated in oil) them.
