If you can't handle something easy like walking up to people ya already know at school to eat with them, how will you handle any real situations at your work place or other? Have confidence! Just walk up and say Hey, is there room for me to squeeze in? Don't wait for a REAL answer. Start to sit down!

Just go up and say hello, how are you all, do you guys mind if i sit here for a little? Not arrogant at all, just a simple question.. Im sure they wont mind.. and you would soon pick up how they feel about your company.

I see no reason why you can't ask. I think it would be arrogant if you just sat down without asking, but asking is ok! Now if they say no, then you have a problem!

It is confidence. If you had never asked them you may never have known. It is a good thing to have the confidence to walk up to a group of people and ask them something, it will help you as you get older. ")

I don't think it's arrogant. It shows initiative and a willingness to put yourself out there to socialize.
Go for it and good luck!
