Or can it still be used with some sort of digi box?

The set is fairly new so should last until then without problem, I see no reason to change it yet as we should be thinking about sustainablity

You can use an external Digital tuner, but remember it's going to need a suitable Antenna or it just won't deliver a picture at all.

You may end up spending £50 just to get your existing Antenna upgraded, and bear in mind this is per TV set, not just per house.

Oh dear......
Francis 24 is quite wrong I'm afraid and so is Dr Green.
You may well need a new aerial on your roof to compensate for the different wavelengths upon which DVB works (an analogue only aerial will not oscillate to all the MUX bands) but you will need ONLY ONE. You can split this through a 75 ohm branch connector two or three times without appreciable signal loss and I've managed seven before the picture went a bit fuzzy on the last one. THERE ARE NO HIGH DEFINITION CHANNELS AVAILABLE ON FREEVIEW YET so you don't need a HDTV set but you do need to buy a box for every set you want to watch it on and they plug in to the SCART socket at the back. Currently there are three kinds of box: Standard, which gives you all the free-to-view channels, Top Up TV which gives you more channels but in a limited broadcast time and for which you have to pay monthly, and Top-Up TV anytime which gives you lots more channels for which you have to pay a bit more every month. Again you don't need a HD set for Top-Up TV.
If you have Sky it's already in digital and the box converts it to work with analogue tellies so you don't need to do anything. You can get High Definition channels in Sky but you need a HD set, a new Sky box and an expensive subscription to get it.
I worked for Comet and one of my many techie jobs there was to explain digital telly and radio to customers and you wouldn't believe the amount of rubbish they told me they'd heard. Your analogue telly can handle digital if it's got a SCART at the back and if you've got ONE (not multiple) aerial on the roof that's a wideband one. Hope that's useful.

Just get a Freeview set-top box, which are now available for less than £50. You can plug this into your existing TV.

you will have to buy HD ready tv because programmes will be made in HD(high definition). your freeview box will not work if you have an ordinary tv in 2012.
if you do buy a HD ready tv make sure its no smaller than 26"
the bigger the better so you can benifit from the quality.
smaller tv's only can hold so many dots per square inch ,
HD tv's can put thousands of dots in an inch so your picture would be clearer and sharper.
So yes your tv will be useless unless you have a playstation etc

Why are you worrying about what's going to happen to your TV in six years?! Haven't you got a life? Why didn't you buy a progressive TV if this one is brand-new?
You can always just put it in the spare room hooked up to a video game console or DVD/VCR and not use it for cable tv.
Sheesh. Talk about unnecessary drama over absolutely nothing.

TV stations wont be sending anymore analogue signals, but you will be able to display any input from a digital reciever (cable or digibox) which is connected to your TV (by scart lead or A/V)
