i went in to tesco the other day, hoping to get an egg mayonaise and cress sandwich , but there wasnt any. instead i got this other sandwich, tesco finest egg and watercress bloomer. it was sliced boiled egg and water cress (no mayonaise though) and it was just two small sandwiches.
whats that all about? why is it called a bloomer?

It was made from a loaf that was called a bloomer.
Bloomer
Thick, long, white loaf, lightly cut across the top so that the cuts open out or ‘bloom’ to give a crisp crust. Sometimes sprinkled with poppy seeds.

Hey, a bloomer is a loaf of bread, when you next go to tesco look in the fresh bread section at the whole loafs and you will see a bloomer, if not then ask to see one thats the best way to find out what something is. I worked at tesco and if anyone used to ask if we had anything in stock but i didnt know what it looked like i would search for it on the internet so i knew for next time.

I hope this has helped.

Sue L beat me to it!

It is a thick, long, rounded (ie. baked on a flat tray, not in a rectangular tin) loaf of soft, white bread. Evidently it originated, and is still popular, in London and South-East England.

The big thing is that it is lightly cut across the top and during baking the cuts open out or "bloom" to give a crustier crust.

A bloomer can also be a mistake. Maybe the baker in tescos ran out of bread and said, "oops! we'll have to use this roll instead. What a bloomer!"
or maybe not.

Just a name for a Delicious bread.
Also in the years gone by old ladies wore nickers half way down to their knees called Bloomers.
Better stick to the bread version though.

the name of loaf of bread, this is normally starts of really small at the ends and the loaf rises in the middle. at a rough guess you ended up with the ends of the bread to make ur sandwich.

From what I find on the web it seems it is ideal for large sliced bread, so it may have more yeast than a normal loaf, and so raises (or 'blooms') more.
