I wonder if you are talking about dynamic braking. Some electric motors can also be generators. If power is given to the device, it becomes a motor. If the device is rotated, it becomes a generator. At a nearby dam used for hydroelectric power, water runs through the generators when power is needed. During periods of low power demaandk, the generators are fed power, and they pump water back up to the dam.

A bridge rectifier consists of four diodes, arranged so that if AC is fed one point of connection on the rectifier, DC is produced at another point. Actually it is not pure DC, but pulsating DC. Imagine the sine wave of AC, with the bottom half flipped over, so the curve is a series of humps.
