Seperation of govenrnment is checks and balances, ie, the legislature checks on the executive, the judiciary checks on everyone.
In other spheres of life, look at the courts for instance, the DAs office checks on the police department, i beilieve there is also a police department within the police itself to check on the excesses of its officers.
then there is banking. the audit department checks on everyone, and there is an external auditor to check on the internal auditor.
What these all do in effect is to make sure that any person, or organization which has certain powers do not misuse them , in that way there are ... checks and balances, think deep, you will find several more instances around you.

this i got from wikipedia.....

The normal division of branches is into the executive (or government), the legislature, and the judiciary. The US system refers to the branches as "branches of government", while some systems use "government" to describe the executive
