I thinks VEIL came before MARY as it is a UNIFORM of the women who wants to be respected, who does n't wants to be " Eye Candy" & "Sex Loly" for the evil whims of men, If u analyse the human history u will find the same because Women's modesty & shame requires her self to be covered i.e Head covering & whole body covering just as Marry did, muslim women,Nuns & other pious women are still doing irrepsective of any faith & culture.

I haven`t heard of any evidence for this, it was certainly not Jewish practice of the time,however Mary after the ascension of Jesus and the fact that She was a widow may have chosen to wear a veil as a sign of her withdrawal into a contemplative life.
