have you looked at corgies? They are great with kids and since you already have a herding breed, it would probably be a good match up. The can do really well in agility too, and would be fine around livestock.

I'm not crazy about small dogs with kids. Not all terriers will be bad with poultry...especially if you get it as a pup and train it yourself. But other than that, maybe a beagle? They're mouthy as all get out, but generally have a decent temperment and pretty hardy. They are also very active and very intelligent. I've seen them run loose with chickens at barns here and they were fine...just needed to be taught, as with ANY dog.

Other than that, if you're looking to go up a size, I'd suggest a Norwegian Elkhound. They are EXCELLENT with children, very smart, love being outdoors and active. They will, however, hold large animals at bay without training. Mine held a moose in my yard until Fish and Game came....lol! But they are a medium sized dog and great family pets.

Pomeranians are sweet little dogs with a good nature. Kids love to sit them on their laps!

If you change your mind about the size then a labrador would also be a good well tempered dog!

Yes, daschunds have the back problems because of their long body. I am not sure what you like, I mean what kind of group you like. So I would suggest you visit the AKC website for more information. http://www.akc.org

jack russells are very sweet natured. i know they are the terrier breed but if you got one that was small it could be taught not to chase and kill... daschunds arent very good at sharing their territory either, from my experience... my female is aweful about that.... anyway i think the jack russell would be best. full of life, energy and sweet as well... hope this helps

Shitzu/ maltese cross, are great little dogs and the kids will love them. Easy to train as they are very smart. The only problem is their long coat, so just get it clipped.

So you're planning this based on BIGOTRY?? Prejudice & RUMORS???

*I* know that BC's are BAD around poultry!! How EDUCATED does THAT sound??? duh.....

Actually, a BORDER *TERRIER* sounds GREAT for your family!!!
