What a great question!

It's a salutation.

Wikipedia has very good information on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello

and now.. Goodbye :-)

Hello is a salutation or greeting in the English language. Its meaning is synonymous with other greetings such as Hi or Hey. Hello was recorded in dictionaries by 1883. Many different languages use an equivalent expression which sounds similar often either starting with an h or having a l sound. Examples would be Russian алло (pronounced as allo), Spanish hola, and Thai haloo. While some languages imported the English word to use it as a greeting upon answering the telephone, several others have their own specific origin for the word, as with Portuguese olá, Spanish hola, German hallo and Hungarian hallom.

I don't think anyone really means what "HELLO" means...it is a greeting and the meaning I'm sure is quite obsolete but people use the word anyway for tradition's sake.

Interesting question...I wish I knew what "Hello" really meant.

I hope you're not met with a bunch of rude answers...rude answers is a sign that people never think about what they say...they say things just because other people have always said it.

This is a good question. Of course its a greeting...what does it mean?

"indications this expected end of the international will bypass like those in the previous it" = indications that it may no longer ensue (only because of the fact the various previous end-of-international predictions have in no way occurred) working example, expected phenomena alongside with earthquakes no longer turning up.

It means hi, how are you? How's it going? It's just a friendly greeting.
