I've lived through two Ice Storms. Gas stoves for cooking, wood stoves for heating, hurricane lamps for light, felt like I was back in the 1800's and I loved it!

The worst thing to do is NOT be prepared for incliment weather. Sad to say a lot of people get into this kind of situation because they either dont know what to do or they have the "IT WONT HAPPEN TO ME ATTITUDE"
You would be surprised at what you can come up with if you are caught unprepared and you have a good imagination. I was once got caught unprepiared while living in the upper peninsula. Got caught in a blizzard and the electricity went out, we had three small children at the time and had to keep them warm as well as intertianed. I discovered that we had no candles but we did have gas heat so keeping warm was easy. It just so happened that I had a garage at the time and had 3 cars sitting inside of it. I removed the battery from one of the cars and the tail light sockets from all three and with an old extension cord i conected the lights together and used the battery for power. You would be amazed at how much light you get from a few tail lights. To keep the kids intertained we found and connected to the battery an old am/fm radio, later on we connected an old black and white 13 inch TV to the battery and it worked very well. The battery lasted for a pretty long time, every 3 or 4 hours we would swap it with one of the other car batteries and charge the used one in the car for 15 or 20 minutes so we would continue to have a good battery. There are lots of ways to make it in an ice storm you just have to use your imagination some times

Ive been through a few ice storms. My first one I was without power for 2 weeks. we were lucky we had a gas floor furnace and a gas oven for cooking. Throw in a couple of kerosene lamps and its business as usual. Only no tv. I had a sled and had alot of fun. Its difficult but one can survive. Kerosene heaters and sandwiches. Fireplace if you have one. Even buying a generator is an option. Worst case scenario would be living in an apartment with no fireplace and electric heat. No kerosene heater or other heat source. In this case I would build a tent in the living room with curtains or sheets to trap in some heat. light some candles and bundle up. Sleep under several blankets. Ive had to do this once. No power, temp in the teens. You might be surprised how much heat from your body and candles gets trapped in such a tent. Caution using candles or any open flame. kerosene heaters generate carbon monoxide and should only be used in a well ventilated area. Generators should only be used outside. Not in a garage either.

Well, it has happened in Georgia. Basically you have to be prepared. Some of your heating could/ should be natural gas. You should have back up tanks. Just keep the temp in the house over 40 so the pipes won't freeze and bundle up. Your food won't deteriorate, so don't sweat that. Hopefully you still have water. You should have at least a two weeks supply of food and even water. I used to have a years supply. Never had any problem with situations like that. Just sit back put on the mittons, and read a book, or go slipping down the driveway.

I am not completely prepared for an ice storm. I have lots of
blankets(and a very furry Shelty dog) to keep me warm. I
have 4 sets of rechargeable batteries to run my flashlights.
I have a DC to AC converter for the cigerette lighter in my
car. I try to keep at least 1/2 tank of gas in my car at all times
during the winter. I probably have at least a week of food
in my place at all times and a propane grill to do some
cooking(it is outdoors though...yikes!). I also have lots of
candles(in holders)around and they do generate a decent
amount of heat. I would probably keep all my faucets on
just a little to hopefully keep the pipes from freezing. Somehow
I still don't think that is enough.
