I am Shia'. Replies of Mawarda & Mintee (all due respect) are not accurate.
We believe that our Prophet said to all Muslims "Ali will be my successor" meaning he will be the Muslims Caliph not a prophet. Sunnis say "he did not say so".
When Mohammed (pbhu) died, a group appointed Abu Bakir. Another group objected saying: "the Prophet said Ali must be the successor". On that unfortunate day, Muslims became two sects. The ones backing Abu Bakir are Sunnis and those backing Ali are Shia's. Ali later went along with this appointment, he did not want Muslims to fight over this matter, he can't have one Muslim killed for such reason.
Ali was 12 when Mohammed, 40 at the time, was visited but Angel Gabriel, he embraced Islam that minute too. Ali & Mohammed are first cousins. Ali father was poor, he asked his relatives to help him raise his children. Mohammed took Ali, he grow up in the house of the Prophet till he was a young man. That does not mean we chose Ali due to the blood relation, we only follow what the Prophet told us.
We have fanatics and simple minded persons (like any other religions or sect) who think that if U want something from Allah, ask it in a manner "I ask U with your love for Mohammed and Ali to give me…..) or they mention Ali and his descendants only. As you know, Ali married Mohammed daughter, making his son the grandson of Mohammed. The other daughters of Mohammed never had children.
Never mind the simple uneducated minds, the main thing is that Ali is very loved by us. We cannot stomach how Abu Bakir, Umer & Uthman can disobey the Prophet and take the Caliph position before him. End of the storey.
I answered this question many time, the last line is: God will judge us all, we just do what we believe is right. I never criticize Sunnis, we are brothers, we share love for Mohammed.

Alevite?
Since Alevism consist of Shia elements.. no, Shias don't worship Ali, but I think they put more emphasize on him more than on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Muslims - Sunni or Shia - only worship God.
*edit*
Alevism is the fusion of Christian, Gnostic and Shiite elements. The Alevites reject the Sharia (Islamic law) because they regard the Koran as not a book of law but notes of revelations, which must be read critically. Therefore they are fighting not to be termed Muslim in order to differentiate themselves from the Sunni.

maybe you are thinking of shiite muslims.. They beleive in living prophets, decendants in the same family of prophet Mohammed. Ali was a son and they originally felt he would take over back then as muslim leader instead of Mohammeds other followers. They still believe anyone from the house of Mohammed carries this honor.. They dont worship them, but to equate it to similar in Christianity where as Jesus is the son of God, so therefore revere his along side God. or like catholics used saints to pray to as a go between.. well Shiites use these modern day prophets as a go between them and God.. where as sunni muslims only pray directly to the sorce.. God and God only..

no they dont......and they dont put emphasis on him more that the prophhet (PBUH)..... i have read multiple books on shia and sunni....the hadith...""ali is my successor"" is also narated in suni books.....i dont know why they dont beleive in him as a leder after the prophet......they beleive that after the prophet there are twelve imams......all of them are from the prophets family.....which makes them more eligible for leadership.....
the second caliph Omar...didnt want the prophet to write a will...and stated he was crazy......this is mentioned in sunni books....but they interpret it in different ways...and the sunnis try to defend Omar in any way......i am a christian reverted to shia.....just now i am sure of it......because i discovered the truth,,,,,,,,and so should you.....there is so much to write about....but i cant fit it all on the page......all i can state is that ali is after the prophet!!!
