The word rapture does not appear in the bible. When you hear the term "rapture" it is often used to describe the coming of the Lord (second advent of Christ). The verse that is most often used to describe "the rapture" is Mathew 24:3.

Mat 24:3
(3) And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Rapture is used to describe the word coming in verse 3 of Mathew 24. The word rapture in it full contest means:

ap‧ture [rap-cher] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation noun, verb -tured, -tur‧ing.
–noun 1.ecstatic joy or delight; joyful ecstasy.
2.Often, raptures. an utterance or expression of ecstatic delight.
3.the carrying of a person to another place or sphere of existence.
4.the Rapture, Theology. the experience, anticipated by some fundamentalist Christians, of meeting Christ midway in the air upon his return to earth.
5.Archaic. the act of carrying off.

–verb (used with object) 6.to enrapture.

[Origin: 1590–1600; rapt + -ure]

rapture. (n.d.). Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.0.1). Retrieved November 06, 2006, from Dictionary.com website: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rapture

The actual word used to describe Jesus Coming is "Parousia" Strong's # 3952. Here is the verse again with the Strong's numbers added.

Mat 24:3
(3) And1161 as he846 sat2521 upon1909 the3588 mount3735 of Olives,1636 the3588 disciples3101 came4334 unto him846 privately,2596, 2398 saying,3004 Tell2036 us,2254 when4219 shall these things5023 be?2071 and2532 what5101 shall be the3588 sign4592 of thy4674 coming,3952 and2532 of the3588 end4930 of the3588 world?165

The Strongs definition of the word parousia is as follows:

G3952
παρουσία
parousia
par-oo-see'-ah
From the present participle of G3918; a being near, that is, advent (often, return; specifically of Christ to punish Jerusalem, or finally the wicked); (by implication) physical aspect: - coming, presence.

As you can see the word rapture has emotional overtones. The word parousia has no emotional overtones to it. The original text is actually talking about Jesus second advent. Jesus does not come for His Church secretly and then come again to destroy sin. Jesus destroys sin at the same time as He draws all believers unto Himself.

2Th 2:8
(8) And2532 then5119 shall that Wicked459 be revealed,601 whom3739 the3588 Lord2962 shall consume355 with the3588 spirit4151 of his848 mouth,4750 and2532 shall destroy2673 with the3588 brightness2015 of his848 coming:3952

The word "coming" in Mt 24:3 is the same word as "coming" in 2Th 2:8. In both instances the word is "parousia" Strong's number 3952 in the Greek dictionary of the Strong's concordance.

When Jesus comes as a thief in the night we are not supposed to be surprised. The wicked are surprised. Look at the parable of the 10 virgins.

Mat 25:1-13
(1) Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
(2) And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
(3) They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
(4) But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
(5) While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
(6) And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
(7) Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
(8) And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
(9) But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
(10) And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
(11) Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
(12) But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
(13) Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

You should notice that the Bridegroom comes for all of the virgins at once. Those virgins that are not ready are left outside of the gate. When they try to get in the bridegroom answers 'assuredly I say to you, I do not know you'. Jesus then tells everybody to watch for we will not know the day or our of His coming.

1Th 5:2-10
(2) For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
(3) For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
(4) But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
(5) Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
(6) Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
(7) For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
(8) But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
(9) For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
(10) Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

In order to watch we must be awake. As you can see Jesus comes to redeem the lost and destroy the wicked at the same time. From this evidence in scripture I have to conclude that there is no 7 year period with Jesus coming at the beginning and rapturing His Church, then coming again to destroy the wicked 7 years later. In order to do what I just mentioned Jesus would have to come back twice. Mathew 24 says that Jesus will come back only once. If we were able to figure out when the 7 years begins we would know when Jesus comes back.

I am not trying to confuse you. I am just giving you the other side of the debate on endtimes prophecy. Think about it. We are told to test (try) all things.

1Jo 4:1
(1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

There is a great book that talks about this whole subject "Endtime Delusions" by Steve Wohlberg. I am not telling you what to believe. I am asking you to consider it. If anything, you will walk away more informed. Pray that the Lord will show you the truth in all things. Search out the solution. Remember if you seek you will find.

God Bless.

Are you interested in the word or its occurence? What will happen in 1Thess 4:16-17 has been termed the rapture, i'm sure you know the bible wasn't in the english language before. Old testament- Aramaic, Hebrew New testament- greek. What was there in the original text is Harpazo. This means what rapture means. The rapture is not the second coming of Christ, the second coming is when the Christ comes to reign as king and we are coming back with him. @rizzo you quoted 1Thess 4:16 without saying anything about it.

The rapture is not in the Bible. It is a modern interpretation of some of the prophetic statements of the book of Revelations and others and was associated with John Darby in the 19th century, and then popularized by an evangelist named William Eugene Blackstone in 1908 in his book "Jesus Is Coming".

There is no such thing as the rapture its based on one verse in the bible, taken out of context, in Luke lets read what the bible 'really' says in about verse 26 of chapter 17 it talks about Noah then in verse 29 it talks about lot and sodom, then it talks in verse 35 of [this is the verse taken out of context] one taken and one left, but in verse 37 explains by Jesus Christ the second member of the Godhead they were taken IN DEATH, hay there is no secret rapture, look in 1 thessalonians 4:15-18 at the loudest verses in ALL the bible does that sound like a secret to you, and look at 2 peter 3:10-12, does anyone get left behind "alive" according to what is said there? The term "Rapture" isn't in the Bible. It comes from a Latin word that means "to snatch out or seize" and is used to describe the moment when the Church will be caught up to Heaven "in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye."

rapture means to be caught up

16. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1Corinthians 15

51. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Matthew 24
40. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Study the bible in Context, whose talking and whose being talked to, you will find that what you read is not what you thought, Paul is not talking to the church he's talking to Israel....Most of the bible is for Israel not the church!
