Numerous studies have placed the occurrence of autism at a rate of approximately 1 in 500 people. At India’s current population, this means there are an estimated 1.7 million autistic persons in the country, assuming that there are no significant variations in this rate worldwide, which is a question that has not yet been addressed by epidemiologists outside the West. While the disorder is not rare, the majority of autistic people in India have not been diagnosed and do not receive the services they need. This problem occurs in many countries, but is especially true in India where there is a tremendous lack of awareness and misunderstanding about autism among the medical professionals, who may either misdiagnose or under diagnose the condition.

The thing about Autism is that it comes in many forms, some so mild as to be dismissed as aspects of a persons personality. Autism often causes behavioural, problems, learning difficulties and problems with social relationships but these problems are less likely to show themselves in India where discipline and respect for parents sets firm boundries than in the west where less parental control is evident.

Probably it is the case that less people are diagnosed as autistic, not that there are actually less autistic people.

At present most of the cases in India are not diagnosed because of lack of awareness of this illness among both public and doctors.I worked in a tertiary care hospital where several such patients were diagnosed and were being followed up. And trust me this illness is no laughing matter
