Peter, as well as some of the other disciples, were crucified. No death could be more painful. Mark was tied between 4 horses and pulled in 4 pieces(or at least that's what some historians say). That's got to hurt a little. Polycarp was burned at the stake. Paul was beheaded not to mention that he was scourged 5 times, beaten with rods 4 times, stoned and many other persecutions while he was alive. The early disciples were persecuted their whole lives and then martyred in the most cruel way. That's why I believe the bible. These men were eyewitnesses of everything they wrote about in the bible and they lived a persecuted life and died horribly and went to their death saying that everything they had said was true when they could have lived a peaceful life and died peacefully if they would just have renounced everything they wrote about. But they didn't. They went to their death saying it was true.

Flesh is flesh, but yet there has been cases even now where people do not feel pain in times where they should feel extreme pain, they mentally shut it off. Pain is the function of the mind. Also there is a disease where the nerves and the pain receptors of people are inoperative. There is a documentary on children that have this problem, through sun dance films, there parents have a hard problem because the kids have burn there hands they feel no pain so they dont move it, another kid had his hand half chewed off by a dog and did not move it at all, there is a purpose to the pain we feel.

With a couple of them, it didn't hurt. For example, Stephen, who was stoned in Acts, "went to sleep" and felt no pain. Others, I'm sure, DID feel pain, but it didn't matter. They knew they would be persecuted, and they also knew that their reward was in Heaven. With that, although they might have been "conscious" of the pain, it just didn't matter. They knew where they were going.
And yes, Christians ARE still being martyred today.

Martyrs feel pain just like all of us. They are human beings that love the Lord so much that for them "to live is Christ and to die is gain."
Daily, Christians are being persecuted and killed for our beliefs.
Just look at the news in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Not a day goes by that a Christian die for His Savior.

well Stephen the martyr was stoned to death, but he felt nothing, coz he fell asleep and went home to be with God.

but others went thru pain.

it depends on the martyr.

God doesnt want anyone to die for Him. Jesus was enough. but sometimes things happen and the world/devil does bad things, and people end up having to die for there faith. It's not God's will. He wants people to live awesome lives and die peacefully.
