Two things - honest answer is that feeling of being able to give yourself completely to a faith. That even though there isn't a shred of empirical evidence to support religion, people are still able to accept it. It gives people a reason for the horrible things that happen in life. It gives people a purpose when they have none. I think atheists are too logical and too grounded to give themselves over so completely to a faith that has absolutely nothing to back it up; but sometimes I wonder if being able to believe is something without basis so thoroughly brings about some level of peace...
The other thing that sucks about being an atheist is having to deal with moronic ******* telling you you're going to hell. They're too stupid to realize that there is no hell and that their little fantasy is meaningless; but like gnats flying around on a summer evening they won't go away and they are f*cking annoying.

I have to say that the worst thing about my atheism is having to hide it from my family. It can't be helped, but I hate having to do it nonetheless. It's either hide it or risk disownment and humiliation, so I'd rather save my last few shreds of sanity and hide it.
If I did manage to find a way to come out and say it, then the worst thing would be like your situation, having rifts between myself and familiy members that we'd never recover from. I already have some rifts between at least three family members(I'd include my grandmother, but I excuse her on account of her being 86 years old and set in her ways and she's polite about it anyways) on religious differences as it is. If I up and let it spill I'm an atheist, it'd probably be even worse.
Outside of not being able to be open about it, I can't see anything that's really bad about it, just wanting to be able to discuss my lack of beliefs with a devout family.

Seeing what's happening to the world in the name of religion and knowing there are so many religious fundamentalists in the world that the suffering is going to continue for so many generations to come. Having to put up with "holier than thou" theists and their harassment. Being discriminated against. Being treated as if I was evil and having to listen to how I'm being controlled by Satan and how I have no morals and am lost and miserable and have nothing to live for etc.
Come to think of it, all the bad things about being an atheist involve "holier than thou" theists.

When you are an atheist, your life is complicated. It is you, and the rest of the world. And you can travel any road you want. You pretty much rely on what your heart tells you. You find that your perspectives about things change like the weather and come and go like the wind. Sometimes what is right and what is wrong is confusing. I have been an atheist before, and I experienced these things. But then I remembered what is was like to believe in God, and now I do, and I am at peace.

Having to hide that you are an atheist to keep your job and your safety. Getting hospitalized by Christians. Getting evangelized by Christians. Not believing in heaven when someone dies and just having to deal with the grief because there's no hiding from it. Having to ask people's forgiveness when you do them wrong rather than just praying to God for forgiveness.

Tolerating people who think they have the moral high ground because they believe a lot of completely unbelievable ideas. Feeling stigmatized as a bad person by the culture around you and sometimes by your own family. Watching helplessly as people kill each other over beliefs that should've been dismissed hundreds of years ago. Knowing that millions of people fantasize about a day when they will be whisked away to heaven while everyone not of their religion will burn for eternity.
Oops! That's more than one thing. You pick.

It's the sex crimes. I'm not free to date sexy teens. What an awful world these Christians have wrought for us all.
Let's talk "morality." My morality is based on the very real fact of my existence, not on some ancient story. I stand for fair trade, not violence or force in any relation with another human being. I stand for the rights of the individual human to create his own destiny, own property, to live and pursue happiness. I stand for the human mind, and it's greatest achievement, the ability to reason.
Let's talk purpose. My purpose is to find happiness, though effort, through discovery, invention, searching the world, using science, for real answers to the real problems of the real world. Not vice, not numbing my mind, not ignoring things I don't like, but facing everything with honesty and interest, going after what I want, making it happen, becoming rich, finding someone wonderful to love, building, being industrious, making the world in my image, and being happy doing all of it, with no guilt, no regrets that haven't been repaid.
The fantasy that someone is going to meet their relatives in heaven, live forever in some wonderland better than the earth, is laughable if it wasn't so perilous. Your life waiting and wishing for that is a wasted life, while mine with no thought to such nonsense, is full, fulfilled, and glorious. Worth every minute, worth an eternity.

I'm not atheist, but just guessing the worst part would be all the attacks from those who don't respect their right to individual belief. I have to salute the atheists ... they've got spunk and stand up to those that oppose them far better than the reverse!

on no account, its basically a different element in case you reside in a spiritual section or society. some people have a no longer hassle-free time accepting people who see issues in a different way than they do. inspect the a number of Christian responses, in basic terms shows they're those with the subject concerns no longer you.
