Why did Mark construct the Messianic Secret (neoWrede)?

I understand why Mark constructed the Messianic Secret according to Wrede. But I'd like to have insight into the modifications of Wrede's theory that work better to explain why there is secrecy about Jesus' identity in Mark.

Funk in 1985 under the auspices of The Westar Institute to renew the quest of the historical Jesus by evaluating the historical significance of every shred of evidence about Jesus from antiquity. I personally don't believe there is any secret identity of Jesus. Why would He do that.
His purpose was to come and be an example and be the sacrificial lamb. Why would He do anything in secret?
