Yes, it's bad. I'm not one to go "politically correct," as anyone who reads my Q&A will quickly discover. But recycling makes sense for so many reasons.

Think of some of the products that are made from recycled materials, and think also of the ones that could be if there was enough recycled material working its way through the collection system to those who can use it. There are statistics all over the place about how much we could do "if everyone recycled."

Now, we all know that "if everyone" just isn't going to happen. That doesn't matter. It's a quantitative thing. If we doubled the amount of available recycled material, then more good ideas about how to use recycled materials would be able to be put into production. And every time that happens, we save the original raw material -- trees, coal and oil, metals -- which is finite and should not be all used up.

So creative ideas in how to use recycled materials would be stimulated by an increase in people who take that little bit of time to do recycling. Many communities now take "unsorted recyclables" and have sorting plants, in order to encourage people to recycle. It gets easy enough that just organizing your own kitchen and household chores it actually pays off to recycle.

Think of it as your good deed for the day, if you need to, but go ahead and do the recycling. It's to our mutual benefit.

Absolutely not! Except for aluminum cans, recycling is economically and environmentally inefficient. It takes more energy (made from natural resources) to recycle a plastic bottle than to make a new one. Paper is even worse. Recycling paper is a manufacturing process:

1) a truck comes to pick up the paper (pollutes the air)
2) the paper is sorted and broken down at a recycling center (uses energy and emits polluting smoke)
3) another truck takes this material to a paper mill (pollutes the air)
4) the paper is de-inked and bleached (creating a chemical sludge)
5) Finally made back into paper (albeit a harsher, grittier paper not good for toilet paper or tissues) (uses more energy and creates more smoke)

Paper that is made from trees uses significantly less energy. Additionally, almost all paper made today comes from trees grown on tree farms that exist for the purpose of making paper! If that's not enough, we have 3 times as many trees today as we did in 1920.

Lastly, the basic economics of the situation tell you which is a more efficient use of resources. In any market, the price of an item is a direct effect of its scarcity (supply and demand). Recycled items cost significantly more than items that are created from their natural sources. So there's no scarcity of resources to be worried about! We don't see the difference because of government subsidies (eight billion dollars per year of taxpayer money is spent by the governent to subsidize recycling programs).

"Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America: a waste of time and money, a waste of human and natural resources." -The New York Times

From an environmental standpoint, of course not recycling is bad. We need to deplete the amount of trash we have by reusing it. If we don't recycle, then dumps grow and will need more land to throw away trash on. If we need more land, there will be less land to build on for homes. So even though you think recycling is just some simple thing, in the long run it's a big thing leading to even bigger problems. Recycling doesn't ask much of anybody, just throw away recyclables into the green trash can and your done!

I expect you already know the answer to your question.

Everyone should try to recycle their rubbish as much as possible so that the planet will be a better cleaner place for future generations.
