Right now when people hear "Muslim" they instead think "terrorist." I know better than this, but unfortunately, you're going to get a lot of ignorant answers to this question.
The Muslims I have known have been very loving, very sincere about their religion. They behave very kindly towards others. I notice two other things about them: one is they tended to be a little more superstitious than I expected. Another is that they tended to not hang out a lot with non-Muslims.
Take care

Good question. You should bring this topic up with other members of your faith and start thinking of ways that you can change the general perception of the Muslim religion in the USA. It would be great if you could start a network that would come out and denounce the horrid things the "radical Muslims" do as far as terrorism. I have never heard of large groups of Muslims that are moderate and true to their religion come out against the violent Muslims. I think being proactive about wanting to get a message of peace out to the world is better than calling people uneducated about the religion if they think you all are terrorists. (Not that you are calling people uneducated you seem like you care about your religion). When other Muslims band together and public ally denounce the violence I think many people will change their thinking. Good luck!

I qualify I guess since I am not Arab but native born American. I honestly have no problem with Muslims as a religious people who are trying to follow their God as they understand him. All of us with religion do that. Yet I wonder why the peaceful muslims don't rise up and declare the killers in your midst as what they are and do something about them, and why they don't stop killing each other (Shiite, Sunni etc.) if they share the same beliefs. Your leaders should take a stand for peaceful processes to resolve differences and your members should join that effort. The arabic part of the world has been killing one another for centuries and should be getting tired of it by now.

I live in the United States. I think in general there is a lot of fear. America tends to be pretty closed minded when it comes to other cultures to begin with, but it has been amplified since September 11th. One difficulty is that Arabs and Muslims in the United States tend to keep to themselves, so it's difficult to form an opinion based on first hand relationships. It's hard enough to approach and make friends with strangers, it's even more difficult to make friends with a stranger who is outside your normal social circle. When Muslims wear their traditional dress, these social divisions are even more pronounced. So I don't think Muslims are bad people, but I do think they could do a better job of integrating with the cultures of countries they move into.

Misinformation is a serious issue here. A lot of Christians, NOT ALL, are angry and afraid because they don't care to understand other cutures and religions. Some sects of Christianity are very unbending in their beliefs that they are the only people that are right.
I personally, know that just like in Christianity, there are extremists in the Muslim world, and know that not all Muslims are like that.

I'm an atheist, and I'm actively hostile to all religion. But I don't judge people based on what religion they claim to be a part of. Having people tell you what religion they belong to is about as valuable as having them tell you what their favorite color is when it comes to making a moral evaluation. But to answer your question, there is a pretty substantial group of people in America, predominantly evangelical Christians, who think we are involved in an epic struggle between good and evil with Islam right now. Islam being evil of course. Needless to say, they don't have a high opinion of Muslims. Personally, I think Islam needs a serious reformation if it's going to join the modern world. Suicide bombers don't make good neighbors, and Islam is producing more than its fair share of suicide bombers right now. Islam is where Christianity was a few hundred years ago: putting people to death for apostasy, treating women as second-class citizens, etc. etc. However, a lot of Muslims seem to be much more scientifically literate than the fundamentalists in my own country. So it does have that going for it. And that's pretty important. I don't know many Muslims, but I see no reason to assume that they'd be any different than any other religious group. They're all a mixed bag -- some good, some bad, and most in between.

The Muslim and Arab culture seem strange to westerners. We don't understand why women must cover their faces when most of the world does not. Also we don't understand how Muslims can kill other human beings in the name of Allah. If Jews, Christians, and Muslims are all from the same God, why would God command Muslims to kill his Jews and Christians? We are all God's creations.

Nana, realize that this is only a sampling of the people who are reading this at this time so it's hard to know how accurate this will be.
Unfortunately, Muslims are getting a lot of bad press right now, especially with so much emphasis being placed on the "muslim extremists"
Just so you know, I really like the Muslim people I have met. Most are kind and generous, and I doubt if any of them are out to terrorize the U.S. They are here to make a better life for themselves and their families.
So, even though a lot of people lump all Muslims into one category, know that some people like myself, realize that Sunnis and Shias are as different as Baptists and Roman Catholics.
So, while I like being a Christian and have no plans to convert, I would like to share one of your own sayings with you.
Your religion says PBUH after Jesus who you consider a prophet. (PBUH = Peace Be Upon Him)
So, peace be upon you also! I wish you no harm and hope that is not offensive, but I wish you peace, in the name of Jesus!
