In my opinion, the rising population across the globe is causing us to use all the land available. There just isn't enough land to cultivate anymore. Is the solution through bioengineering?

There are poor people everywhere. Only the proportion of poor to rich changes. But "poor" and "hungry" need not go together. The problem, of course, is distribution. It's not just land to cultivate, of course, but the efficiency of the cultivation, and the efficiency of the distribution of the food thus produced.

America has a lot partly because of very fortunate climate and fertile soils. But a major reason those soils are fertile is that farmers have, for many years, studied the conditions and used the information developed in agricultural colleges, and developed a scientific approach to agriculture. Living in central California, I have intimate contact with the incredibly productive results of this scientific approach. They have bio-engineers and plant botany experts and the benefit of extremely detailed knowledge of the genetic make-up of their animals and crops, and in general, a highly evolved, highly efficient system.

That's what we need to import to the third world so it can feed itself: knowledge. Information. Education in agricultural sciences. Ecologists and experts in organic farming could transform the globe if they were given the economic support. But that has to be private, not public, or it will be entangled in politics and never reach the People.

Hunger is a problem in all countries, not just third world ones. Why else would we have food banks and charity drives? In third world countries there are a lot of other problems that cause hunger that they are not equip to deal with such as drought, insects, sickness. If there is no water, it doesnt matter how much land there is, nothing will grow. Developed nations are better equiped to handle such situations than are third world countries. As for population limites, thats a personal opinion. Some people say we are over populated right now, others say we wont be until every square inch of earth is covered with people. Bioengineering may provide some solutions, but it may also introduce some issues and consequences that havent been discovered yet.

mainly lack of resources, primarily Natural and Skilled Labor Resources. Some third world countries do have abundant land but have very little arable land to do agriculture. this is very true for african and other desert ridden third world countries. another reason is the lack of natural resources, the very core issue of which is water. without our valuable agua, people's health decrease due to extreme dehydration or poor sanitation. Lack of land to cultivate isn't the problem, lack of arable land is. bioengineering is an area of interest to explore, a drought resistant crop should be researched on and made available to those who need it at a very cheap price. i really think that would help.

Frequently famines today go hand in hand with war. The same was true of Europe until fairly recently and was very nearly true in some parts of North America during the US. Civil War.

Another overlooked factor is lack of adequate transportation within a country. Food supplies might be more than adequate in one region of a country but there may be no means of transporting it to regions where there are shortages. I once saw a doco about a village in the nth of Africa where the villagers had to walk three days to reach a road trafficable by motor vehicles.

One of the reasons that India and China no longer have serious problems with food shortages in most of their regions is the construction of rail and road networks,

Genetic engineering may or may not increase food supplies but this is hardly necessary. The US, Australia and many other countries have produced large food surpluses each year for well over 150 years.

Hunger with an E!.. and now to your question.. No it is not lack of L, L, R, It is western greed... 300 billion Euros a year in subsidies to American Farmers 400 billion Euros a year to European Farmers in government subsidies.. and where in the hell is the 3rd world geographically? There is only one world and the west has no interest in letting black people live.. The aids crisis on the African continent is proof that the west has no real interest in Africa.. When people needed cheap Anti- retro viral medicines, US pharmaceuticals filed law suits against the Brazilians in order to block the sale of a cheaper alternative drugs to the Africans i

Farmers in Europe protested for months in the streets of Paris to block their governments from adopting new measures to introduce Fair Trade agreements with Africa. If it were not for people like Bob Geldof and Bono the African Continent and other poor nations would have no voice at all. Not only do governments in the west not give a damn about poor nations, their peoples do not either, if they did there would be a global outcry. But I bet we will never stop hearing about the Holocaust or 9/11

3rd world countries are characterized by:
population explosion, that causes diminished amount of resourced per head.
lack of financial resources needed for investment in basic technology, health and education, which prevents economic growth
corruption, which prevents foreign investments, make a few very rich individuals and a multitude of hungry and ignorant lower echelon citizens.
all these factors cause inability of the country to get out of this vicious circle

Poverty is not caused by the lack of land or resources.

Poverty is caused by the unjust and unequal distribution of resources coupled by the uncontrolled increase in population.

lack of education and technology
the 3rd world countries have endless resources like oil, diamond, pure water, solar power, agriculture... many resources but they dont know how to use it efficiently.
